Layout
A clean layout makes information easier to read and understand. Avoid packing too much onto one page. Use white space (blank space) so readers have room to scan and process the content. When in doubt, split content across multiple pages instead of creating a tight, visually overwhelming layout.
Use heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, etc.) to organize content. Screen readers rely on properly used headings to help users navigate a document or web page. Headings should be in order and used to show structure—not just because they look nice.
Layout tips
- Use 1-inch margins when creating documents (when possible).
- Keep images/figures with their captions and avoid crowding them with text.
- Avoid using columns. If you use columns, leave enough space between them so the text doesn’t feel cramped.
- Don’t skip heading levels (for example, don’t jump from Heading 2 to Heading 4).
- Choose a heading style because it matches the structure of the content—not just because you like the look.
