Color

Some people experience color blindness or low vision. For that reason, color should never be the only way you communicate meaning. Make sure your message still makes sense in black and white (or if colors look different to the reader). Use headings, spacing, and clear labels to organize content first—then add color as a visual support.

Color tips

  • Don’t use color as the only way to communicate information (for example, “items in red are required”). Add text labels like “Required.”
  • Choose color combinations with strong contrast between text and background.
  • Check your color choices before publishing (especially for text over colored backgrounds).
  • Smaller text needs higher contrast than large text.
