Dear Families,

Happy New Year!

The New Year brings some unfortunate news to our classroom.  Britain will not be working with us anymore.  We wish her happiness and luck in her next great adventure- parenting- just six weeks away!  Crystal Salo and Cathy Tretler, two familiar and well-loved substitutes (both former assistants here at the preschool) will fill in until we make a permanent hire.

Our next focus is rhyming and nursery rhymes.  This is a wonderful focus for our preschoolers because it works with every one of them, from the youngest three year old to our oldest five-year-old. All of the children will enjoy singing “Willaby, Wallaby” and other rhyming songs.  Everyone will have fun acting out and doing crafts related to nursery rhymes.    We have many Humpty Dumptys ready to sit on the wall behind the couch and our focus book box is full of rhyming stories.  We will be adding new rhyming songs to our circle time favorites.  Older children will be working more in depth, on recognizing rhymes to their names and to familiar objects.  They will play games with rhyme and letter sounds.   Recognizing, and later generating, rhyme is one important building block in pre-reading skills.  A lot of our finger plays, games and songs are intended to help children become aware of the sounds of language (or “develop phonemic awareness” in teacher-speak).   The children are having fun with language while they are practicing getting ready to become readers.
Thanks for all you do,
Jennifer
